Service Trips - CORE & SOLE

Special programs for older campers at High Trails include SOLE, CORE and a counselor-in-training program. 8th graders may choose a multi-day SOLE (Sanborn Outdoor Leadership Experience) mountaineering or horseback riding trip. 9th graders can choose a CORE (Community OutReach Experience) trip centered on rock-climbing, mountain biking, or horseback riding. These trips are often coed, and each trip provides campers with the opportunity to learn and practice leadership, team development and technical skills in a safe and exciting outdoor environment.

10th graders at camp are invited to join our counselor-in-training program as Junior Counselors. In addition to enjoying advanced activities with peers, JCs participate in extensive leadership training and accept real responsibility by taking on camp-wide responsibilities and working with younger campers in the program.

All teen programs also include a service component, often partnering with state and local environmental organizations to complete a project. The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) and the Coalition for the Upper South Platte (CUSP), lead campers in trail maintenance projects both on National Forest land and at Sanborn. SOLE, CORE, and the Junior Counselor experience encourage young people to make a positive difference at camp, in their schools, and in their communities. Most schools honor the community service hours earned during the SOLE, CORE, and JC programs.
